Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 - 1564) was born in Caprese, Italy, but was raised in Florence. During his lifetime, Michelangelo acquired fame and wealth and was even commissioned by seven popes. A true Renaissance man, Michelangelo mastered painting, sculpting, drawing, poetry and architecture. Pieta, one of his most famous sculptures, depicts Jesus and Mary after the crucifixion. The sculpture was completed when he was only 24 years old and is the only piece that Michelangelo ever signed. Pieta is currently located in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The dome of St. Peter’s Basilica was designed by Michelangelo, although it was not completed until after his death. The Sistine Chapel, also located in Vatican City, is home to many of Michelangelo’s most famous works. He spent four years painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which portrays famous scenes from the Bible. Michelangelo’s paintings from the Sistine Chapel are popular art prints and posters for homes, offices and churches. The masterpiece contains over 300 figures, but some of the most popular art prints include: The Creation of Adam art print, Cumaean Sibyl art print, the Great Flood art print and the Garden of Eden art print. Also located in the Sistine Chapel on the altar wall is the fresco of The Last Judgment. The art works our members like the most, available as art prints, posters and framed prints: 1. Creation of Man, 2. La croce del Golgota, 3. Nude II, 4. The Creation of Adam, 5. The Creation of Adam (detail).
