Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 1849) was born in Edo, present-day Tokyo. He was an established ukiyo-e artist with an eccentric and sensational reputation. It was customary during Hokusai's time for Japanese artists to go by a number of different names. Katsushika Hokusai far exceeded the norm and was known by 30 different names during his lifetime. His first paintings, which were portraits of Kabuki actors, were created under the name Shunro, a name given while he worked in Shunsho's studio. He later transitioned into painting landscapes and daily life in Japan. Although Katsushika Hokusai created over 30,000 woodblock prints, paintings, sketches and illustrations, he is known internationally for his series of prints painted on wood blocks, the "36 Views of Mount Fuji". He began this series of artworks when he was 69 years old. The "36 Views of Mount Fuji" depict the famous Japanese mountain in different seasons and from different views. After the original 36 wood block prints were completed, another 10 were added due to their popularity. Some of the most popular Katsushika Hokusai art prints include: The Wave off Kanagawa and Red Mount Fuji. The art works our members like the most, available as art prints, posters and framed prints: 1. The Great Wave at Kanagawa, 2. Moon, Persimmon and Grasshopper, 1807, 3. The Great Wave of Kanagawa, 4. The Great Wave off Kanagawa, c.1830, 5. Red Mount Fuji (Mural).
