Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 - 1901), most famous for his art nouveau posters and vintage advertisements, expressed his creativity through many mediums. Henri's parents were actually cousins, which was characteristic of aristocratic families during this time. His two grandmothers were sisters, and this inbreeding led to medical problems. As a full-grown adult Toulouse-Lautrec only reached 5-foot-1-inch. He grew up in France and is considered one of the great post-impressionist painters, along with Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. His artwork depicts the details of the of the late 19th century bohemian French community. When his notoriety as an artist gained momentum, Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to create posters for the cabaret Moulin Rouge, such as La Goulue at the Moulin Rouge. Jane Avril, a famous can-can dancer, was a popular subject in Toulouse-Lautrec's posters. After his success with Moulin Rouge, he continued to design posters and advertisements, including: Confetti poster and The Simpson Chain poster. Some of his most famous paintings remain popular as art prints. Some of these Toulouse-Lautrec art prints include: The Toilet art print, In the Salon at the Rue des Moulins art print and At the Circus Fernando: The Ringmaster.
