Georgia O'Keefe (1887 - 1986) is an American female painter who revitalized 20th Century art with her vibrantly fluid naturalism. She studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York but felt stifled in her artistic expression. It was not until she was introduced to the art theories of Arthur Wesley Dow that her powerful inner vision was unleashed. In 1916, she met photographer Alfred Stieglitz who became smitten with her art and her personality. They began living together though he was 23 years older and a married man. They married in 1924, a union that lasted until his death in 1946. O'Keefe was an original who never fit a genre. Her enraptured depictions of flowers, clouds and bones redefine nature as part of human nature; no alienation or 20th Century angst is evoked. O'Keefe was a conduit for primal mystery to proclaim its wonder ("Ram's Skull with Brown Leaves"). Through O'Keefe's artwork, luminescent flowers and abstract forms become embodiments of feminine sensuality ("An Orchid", "Gray Line with Black, Blue, and Yellow, 1923"). "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for." She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on January 10, 1977, the only female artist ever to receive this prestigious honor. The art works our members like the most, available as art prints, posters and framed prints: 1. Gray Line with Black, Blue, and Yellow, 1923, 2. Petunias, 1925, 3. White Camellia, 4. Deer's Skull with Pedernal, 5. Sunflower, New Mexico, 1935.
