Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944), a Norwegian painter and printmaker, is known for his expressionist artistic style and the symbolism in his paintings. In his early years as a painter, Munch experimented with impressionism and other styles. His paintings were not received well by critics and were often controversial. However, he continued to pursue his passion and earned the respect of critics and eventually the public. In the early 1900s, Munch exhibited alongside the Fauvists and it was around this time he was earning a decent income from commissions. Munch is most well-known for his painting The Scream, which is one of the paintings from The Frieze of Life series. The Scream has served as inspiration for many things in pop culture, such as the movie Scream and a series of silk screens by Andy Warhol. Today, most of Edvard Munch's paintings and prints are displayed at the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway.
